How to Stabilize a Wi-Fi Connection

For many businesses, especially smaller ones, Wi-Fi is an essential component of daily operations. When your wireless Internet connection’s strength and reliability change, it can interfere with file transfers, streaming video, online meetings, and standard computer operations. By taking action to stabilise the Wi-Fi connection, you may get rid of the numerous tiny issues that add up to reduce productivity and frustrate users.

1. To minimise wireless interference in your workplace setting and minimise signal loss, place the router in a central area, away from outside walls. Place it at least six feet away from anything metal, such as filing cabinets, desks, and refrigerators, which can weaken the signal. Move appliances like cordless phones, microwaves, Bluetooth gadgets, and wireless printers that can disrupt Wi-Fi connectivity.

2. To optimise your Wi-Fi hardware, go in to the router management page and apply any available firmware updates. Change the router channel from the same screen to a less congested one; this can improve signal reliability right away, especially if nearby offices are broadcasting on the same Wi-Fi channel. If you’re still using the router’s included antenna, swap it out for a high-gain one to improve signal transmission. Installing a wireless repeater to amplify and rebroadcast the signal from the router into the furthest reaches of the building will solve signal stability issues in a large office.

3. All of your business laptops should have their wireless adapters updated. If you use a Mac, select “Software Updates” from the Apple menu, then follow the on-screen instructions to install any updates that are available. Open Windows Update and select “Check for updates” if you use PCs at work. Look for the name of your network adaptor and install any updates that are listed there. Visit the website of the manufacturer of your adapter and perform a search for the product name to manually install upgrades. Double-clicking the file will start the installation after you download the most recent drivers.

4. If your business has developed since you first deployed your wireless network, it is very effective to upgrade your router to one that can handle the usage demand for your organisation. Search for a business-class router that can handle several connections and data demands without slowing down or becoming unstable. Pick one that utilises Wireless-N technology for more security and faster speeds compared to Wireless-G or earlier varieties. Make sure the router can manage several virtual private network (VPN) connections if your employees connect to the server from remote locations.
