Obtaining high resolution photos with at least 300 PPI will guarantee no quality loss or distortion to the completed result for the highest print quality possible. To satisfy your quality and printing requirements, certain photographs must be downsized and modified, although this isn’t always achievable. Images might be of inferior quality for a variety of reasons, including the camera used, the lighting circumstances, or if the original picture has been lost and only a smaller, altered version of it is left.
But due to the maximum pixel resolution it can support, you can’t just enlarge any image. When you enlarge an image, the programme you’re using also needs to enlarge each individual pixel, which might result in fragmented images with jagged edges. Although getting a high-resolution photograph right away is always the ideal choice, there are software solutions available if that isn’t possible.
Use Photoshop
When you resize an image, you change the image’s dimensions but not its pixel size. To avoid quality loss, the size of the image will decrease as the resolution is increased without affecting the pixel size. However, there will always be a quality loss if you resample an image to change its size. This is due to the fact that resampling employs a technique called interpolation, which must calculate the number of pixels to construct depending on the pixels in the present image. Even more so when there are color shifts or distinct lines and forms, which might result in fuzziness and jagged edges.
You must select the “Resample Image” option if you wish to maintain the existing image’s dimensions. Otherwise, when you adjust the resolution, the image’s dimensions will also change automatically. When increasing resolution, it’s important to pick a height and breadth that guarantee the pixels’ quality.
Use Preview on Mac
You can use Mac Preview if you don’t have Photoshop. Before choosing the option Tools from the menu bar, first open the chosen image in Preview. When you scroll down to “Adjust Size,” a pop-up window with choices to change the resolutions and pixel sizes will display.
Using Illustrator
If the picture you wish to edit is an illustration, you may use Illustrator’s “Image Vector” function to convert it to a vector format. Once you’ve imported your raster image, go to the menu bar, click Window, and then select “Image Trace.” This takes longer since, in order to preserve quality, you are essentially recreating the illustration in vector.
